What's Your Sign?
What's your sign? An all too familiar question for those of
us who lived through the decade of the seventies. Anyone ever
heard of the "Age of Aquarius" a pop song by the
FIFTH DIMENSION from the late sixties/early seventies?
Are you and Aquarius? A Pisces? A Libra? A Capricorn? A Leo?
Do you know? Should you know? Perhaps you have eaten in a Chinese
restaurant and had a place mat on the table that tells you
that you are a "dog" or "monkey", "horse" or "sheep" because
you were born in a particular year. That is the Chinese Zodiac.
Several years ago, seems like a lifetime now, we had a different
President in this country. He was hated by the media elite,
but very popular with and well respected by the people, especially
among the law and order crowd and the fundamental religious
element of society; but he very much upset and caused dismay
in many of those who supported and admired him when it was
learned that he made important decisions (or allowed them to
be made for him by his wife) based on a personal astrologer's
direction. If she said "Ronnie, you can't go to Europe
on the 16th for that summit because the stars say its not right.." He
wouldn't go. We're talking about arguably the most powerful
and important man on the planet.
Do we really want him to make important, perhaps crucial decisions,
based on some person's interpretation of the alignment of the
stars and planets? What is the point of knowing your "sign"?
If you know your sign, then you can plug-in to the strange
world of astrology and read your horoscope to see if it has
any relevance to your life.
Basically, "astrology is the method of anticipating or
foretelling events by calculating the effect the sun, moon,
stars and planets have on human activities." It is believed
the relative position of the heavenly bodies at the moment
of a child's birth influence their character and personality.
In effect, the stars reveal a person's destiny.
What kind of things do people look to their horoscopes for?
Marriage? Jobs? Personal relationships? WHY DO THEY DO THESE
THINGS? It is because humans want to be guided through the
complexities of life. They want a place to look for direction
We as christians have a better guide, a true advisor. Jesus
promised us that the Holy Spirit, which he gives to believers
as a down payment on eternal life, would lead us into all truth
(John 16:13). Is it OK with GOD if we look to the stars for
guidance in our daily lives? What does the Bible have to say
about this practice of ASTROLOGY?
The word astrology does not occur in the King James Text.
However, the words astrologer and astrologers do occur a total
of nine (once in the singular, eight times in the plural).
Daniel 2:10 - "The Chaldeans answered before the king,
and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the
king's matter: therefore [there is] no king, lord, nor ruler,
[that] asked such things at any magician, or astrologer, or
Note repetition of CHALDEAN. Chaldeans are considered to be
the founders of the astrological craft. What famous patriarch
was a chaldean? Genesis 11:28 tells us that Abraham's grandfather
was born in UR of the CHALDEES. The birthplace of astrology
was the birthplace of Abraham's family.
Genesis 15:5 - "And he brought him forth abroad, and
said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be
able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed
Genesis 15:6 - "And he believed in the LORD; and he counted
it to him for righteousness."
It sort of makes sense that GOD used the stars as a teaching
tool to reveal his plan to Abraham when you consider his ancestry
and exposure to stargazers. But does Abraham's ancestral exposure
to stargazing justify the use of astrology amongst GOD's called
out people? God DID establish the heavenly bodies for particular
purposes, but he didn't tell us to order our lives by them.
Genesis 1:14 - "And God said, Let there be lights in
the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night;
and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and
Genesis 1:15 - "And let them be for lights in the firmament
of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so."
Genesis 1:16 - "And God made two great lights; the greater
light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night:
[he made] the stars also."
Genesis 1:17 - "And God set them in the firmament of
the heaven to give light upon the earth,"
Genesis 1:18 - "And to rule over the day and over the
night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw
that [it was] good."
GOD wants us to order our lives according to his word. Yeshua
said man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that
proceedeth out of the mouth of GOD.
Psalm 119:103 - "How sweet are thy words unto my taste!
[yea, sweeter] than honey to my mouth!"
Psalm 119:104 - "Through thy precepts I get understanding:
therefore I hate every false way."
Psalm 119:105 - "Thy word [is] a lamp unto my feet, and
a light unto my path."
Psalm 119:106 - "I have sworn, and I will perform [it],
that I will keep thy righteous judgments."
Verse 105 says "your word" not the sun moon and
stars, is a lamp and a light to guide our footsteps. So, does
the Bible speak directly against astrology?
Jeremiah 10:2 - "Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way
of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven;
for the heathen are dismayed at them."
GOD knew the influence the world around us would have on us:
Deuteronomy 18:9 - "When thou art come into the land
which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to
do after the abominations of those nations."
Deuteronomy 18:10 - "There shall not be found among you
[any one] that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through
the fire, [or] that useth divination, [or] an observer of times,
or an enchanter, or a witch,"
Deuteronomy 18:11 - "Or a charmer, or a consulter with
familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer."
Deuteronomy 18:12 - "For all that do these things [are]
an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations
the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee."
Deuteronomy 18:13 - "Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD
In these scriptures we read of the condemnation of certain
practices. What do these have to do with astrology? Remember
that we defined astrology as a method of anticipating or foretelling
events. That is precisely what "divination" means
Daniel the prophet lumps astrologers in with magicians and
soothsayers (Daniel 1:20, 2:2, 10, 27, and 4:7)
The first time the word astrologers appears in the KJV text
is in Isaiah 47:13. Here the prophet speaks the words of GOD
to the Babylonian/Chaldean system.
Isaiah 47:1 - "Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin
daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: [there is] no throne,
O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called
tender and delicate."
Isaiah 47:2 - "Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover
thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over
Isaiah 47:3 -"Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea,
thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will
not meet [thee as] a man."
Isaiah 47:4 - "[As for] our redeemer, the LORD of hosts
[is] his name, the Holy One of Israel."
Isaiah 47:5 - "Sit thou silent, and get thee into darkness,
O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called,
The lady of kingdoms."
How does the scripture refer to Mystery Babylon? As a woman.
Revelation 17:3 - "So he carried me away in the spirit
into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet colored
beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten
Revelation 17:4 - "And the woman was arrayed in purple
and scarlet color, and decked with gold and precious stones
and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations
and filthiness of her fornication:"
Revelation 17:5 - "And upon her forehead [was] a name
written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS
AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH."
Revelation 17:6 - "And I saw the woman drunken with the
blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus:
and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration."
Back to Isaiah 47...
Isaiah 47:6 - "I was wroth with my people, I have polluted
mine inheritance, and given them into thine hand: thou didst
shew them no mercy; upon the ancient hast thou very heavily
laid thy yoke."
Isaiah 47:7 - "And thou saidst, I shall be a lady for
ever: [so] that thou didst not lay these [things] to thy heart,
neither didst remember the latter end of it."
Isaiah 47:8 - "Therefore hear now this, [thou that art]
given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in
thine heart, I [am], and none else beside me; I shall not sit
[as] a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children:"
Isaiah 47:9 - "But these two [things] shall come to thee
in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood:
they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude
of thy sorceries, [and] for the great abundance of thine enchantments."
Isaiah 47:10 - "For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness:
thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge,
it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart,
I [am], and none else beside me."
Isaiah 47:11 - "Therefore shall evil come upon thee;
thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall
fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation
shall come upon thee suddenly, [which] thou shalt not know."
Isaiah 47:12 - "Stand now with thine enchantments, and
with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast labored
from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so
be thou mayest prevail."
Isaiah 47:13 - "Thou art wearied in the multitude of
thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the
monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from [these
things] that shall come upon thee."
Isaiah 47:14 - "Behold, they shall be as stubble; the
fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from
the power of the flame: [there shall] not [be] a coal to warm
at, [nor] fire to sit before it."
Isaiah 47:15 - "Thus shall they be unto thee with whom
thou hast labored, [even] thy merchants, from thy youth: they
shall wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee."
GOD CALLS OUT TO HIS PEOPLE TO BE SEPARATE FROM THE BABYLONIAN
Revelation18:4 - "And I heard another voice from heaven,
saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers
of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues."
Some would protest that they do not worship the stars by following
their horoscope. But...
Romans 6:16 - "Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves
servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether
of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?"
JESUS SAID A MAN CANNOT SERVE 2 MASTERS.
Proverbs 3:5 - "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart;
and lean not unto thine own understanding."
Proverbs 3:6 - "In all thy ways acknowledge him, and
he (NOT THE STARS) shall direct thy paths."
